3 have always innovated; as evidenced by having their slogan ‘changing mobile forever’ as their lead message. It is this that saw them forge into the social networking space in partnership with INQ around this time last year, a move that was well received. However, both Orange and Vodafone are, as UKGadgeteer reports, “preparing some social networking software to improve their customer experience…”

Orange has ‘Social Life’ (which you can read about courtesy of Mobile Europe) that will aggregate activity from Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. It will be accessible through the operator’s portal, Orange World.

The third player in this battle is Vodafone with ‘Vodafone People’. TechCrunch covered this with insider videos, which have since been removed, but there is still plenty to get your teeth into, “Vodafone is now aiming squarely at integrating social networks, an area which the 3 network has pushed heavily to date. Vodafone People has ‘active contacts’, similar to the old Jaiku format and seems to be taking on INQ Mobile by syncing contacts on multiple devices and details with Facebook. In other words, Vodafone appears spooked by Three’s focus on social networking.”

As UKGadgeteer concludes “it seems these three networks are going to be going head to head to claim superiority in the Social Networking space.” Is there space for all of them? How will it all pan out? We’d love to hear your thoughts…

Timelines is running and our guys on board are exposed to the 3mobilebuzz readership and beyond. Something that Marianne found as a bit of a shock, “I feel strangely naked now. I guess that from now on, I must start taking part in only highly interesting and exciting happenings. Phew.” From the menial to the magical Marianne, we’re happy!

Iain Baker updated his Twitter followers on the commencement of the project and Kai has been updating furiously, notable visual highlight for me – green tea.

Speculation on a merger between 3 and T-Mobile in the UK market has prompted ITProPortal to put together five reasons why the possible move should go ahead.

The list includes; thoughts on the combined force of 3 and T-Mobile against the other three providers, the fact they’re already working together and the compatibility of both being progressive players in the market. There is also discussion on the financial implications and perhaps most importantly whether the deal would be good for the consumer.

At Top 10 Broadband, Jonathan Leggett has written on a Financial Times story that suggests 3 are set to acquire the UK division of T-Mobile.

It appears that T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telecom is looking to sell the UK division and with the networks currently positioned as they are, speculation suggests 3 are likely to take the reins, “The two firms currently already share their mobile broadband and mobile phone network. Furthermore, 3 does not have a 2G mobile network of its own.”

Jonathan suggests that if the merger were to go ahead “it would create one of the mobile broadband sector’s largest players and would dramatically boost 3’s already-growing customer base.” Interesting stuff, but with 3 and T-Mobile declining to comment we can only wait.

According to The Independent, ‘Mobile Manga’ is big business in Japan where ‘more than 100 million people own mobile phones’ and the popularity of these mobile phone novels has led to art and film being designed ‘specifically for the mobile’.

Sarah Pope, head of marketing at 3, says that artists are using ‘social networking tools on the internet to get their music, photography, art and films noticed’, and with devices like the INQ1 3 ‘want to extend this process to the mobile’

So a bright future could be in store for mobile artists and if the creator of Japan’s Pocket Film Festival is to be believed, we could soon see this new form of ‘films winning Oscars’

“Analysts said that strong sales of the gadget by 3 and its rivals proved that dongles posed a significant threat to traditional landline phone companies such as BT and to the providers of “wi-fi” hotspots.”

This poses the question; how far dongles can actually go? Head over for the full article.

17 February, 2009.Handsets INQ1

It took a while, but now it seems there will be a rival to the INQ1, possibly launched by LG.

According to Tom Dunmore on the Stuff.tv blog, this year will see LG “pushing social networking devices harder” this year. Using the Android platform, these Google style rivals are coming to try and knock the “mighty INQ1” from its social media perch.

Can anything match the INQ1? Let Tom know what you think.

Communications Minister, Eamon Ryan, has announced that every person in Ireland will be able to access high speed internet services within 21 months.

Currently 10% of the population is unable to do so due to their locales being deemed as ‘remote’. However, with the broadband access seen as an essential, a deal has been made with 3 Ireland to achieve nationwide coverage within the time frame.

21 January, 2009.INQ1

Waynedance has asked the Money Saving Expert community about the INQ1. He’s not used the internet via a mobile before, but is interested in doing so and thinks the INQ1 may be for him.

Ladybolan and Esgategreen are both INQ1 owners and offer advice on the handset. Dime Bar also jumps in stating that, “all in all I personally think it is a good phone”. This is despite feeling that the messenger integration is ‘a little buggy’.

AdonisMobile has reviewed the INQ1 in a post entitled “INQ1 – A Love And Hate Relationship”.

He spent the festive period trialling the device and has explored most of what it has to offer. As such the review is nicely segmented into the relevant features he believes are worth talking about. Some of which he thought were good and some less so. And in light of this he sees the INQ1 as tightly targeted, “aimed at the mass market of teens and mobile novices.”
