Ant feels good with INQ

5th December, 2008inq1

Ever fresh and not, as far as we’re aware, plastic – Ant has been busy uploading videos of the recent 3 INQ launch, and we’re happy to report that they’re a great watch.

Speaking of 3’s inspiration to move into easy, affordable mobile internet – and plenty more, Frank Meehan explains just how easy it is to Social Network in full with the INQ. Meanwhile, Kevin Russell, 3 UK CEO, talks about 3’s plans for the future, and the exciting plans that are in store.

Go and see them over here, or watch the first of 4 below.

Short and sweet… and interesting…

25th November, 2008inq1

Ant UK at Fresh Plastic has been doing a little stat checking, making sure he’s satisfying his readers.

In the process he noticed a trend. It was a trend that prompted a one line blog post. Apparently Microsoft have been reading a lot about INQ. And, annoyingly for Ant, not checking any other content!

Direct your thoughts and conspiracy theories here.

Shiny Shiny liveblog the INQ1

13th November, 2008Handsets

As if you were at the launch yourself! Shiny Shiny liveblogged all that was happening during the INQ1 announcement and presentation this morning.

They’ve got the skinny on the handset, the ethos behind the device and why it was created, as well some interesting statistics on the usage of handsets and mobile internet. They, very much like Ant, are “Woo”ing the inclusion of Last.fm, among a few other things.

If you want to get a feel for what occured earlier today, and read about the INQ1’s integration of social media related services, then leap to here.

Ant impressed by the INQ1

13th November, 2008Handsets

Despite an initial visual faux pas this morning before the reveal of the INQ1, Ant is now suitably impressed.

He’s got oodles to upload, including Frank Meehan’s part of the INQ1 presentation that occured this morning. Someone who, after talking to him, he believes to be “quite a cool guy”. Ant is also notably impressed with the appearance of Last.fm on the handset. Is it something that would tempt you? For now, stay tuned for Ant’s video and his further thoughts.

Fresh Plastic sends the W595 on

31st October, 2008Handsets

Ant UK at Fresh Plastic has passed on his Sony Ericsson W595 from 3 to his nephew. A relinquishing that was done “with great difficulty.”

He admits that this was always his plan and that the device is not the type of mobile he needs, despite how much he liked it, “[The W595] was fun - something sorely lacking in most other handsets I’ve used.

After a little difficulty, the handset was returned to factory settings and now Ant is hoping that his nephew who is beginning to get use out of Bebo and MSN will be able to utilise these through the W595.

To see more on the W595 and the Spookfest that accompanied the launch click here for the launch site and here for the accompanying and amusing YouTube vids.

Ant UK talks the Darkside and W595

14th October, 2008Handsets

Ant took the opportunity of that most rare occasion, a sunny day across our fair land, to put to the test his new Sony Ericsson W595 from 3 by taking a few snaps.

ant-uk-w595.jpg

He does have a “few gripes” but admits these are potentially to do with the fact he is yet to become entirely familiar with the device, having had it for only a few days. After the pics and initial reaction Ant turns his attention to the Darkside, the launch event he attended for the device. Think spook-a-thon with the W595 at the heart of the ghoulish activities. You can see the YouTube channel here and below is an example of the sort of thing you’ll find there.

Aww, cupcake…

1st October, 20083 Skypephone

Friend of 3mobilebuzz, Ant UK has been getting a ’sweet’ deal from 3. After spending some time, “at most, quarter of an hour,” doing a piece to camera for them, he received a text thanking him and suggesting that for his help they’d send him a “cake or something”. And they did! Nine delectably topped cupcakes in fact, direct from the The Hummingbird Bakery. A nice touch indeed - they look very good… I may follow my own link, then check out ordering information…

3’s Xmas in July Event…

Let us just say 3 currently have it going on and there is a lot of it. There seems to be little value in beating around the bush, a phrase that suits the chosen setting for 3’s Crimbo in summer event, seeing as it was set in a faux park, resplendent with benches, blankets, picnic and, a topiary bush crafted into the brand logo.

As for the attendees, there were plenty of interested parties, among whom were some of the more regular names featured in our own pages. Already to have written up some thoughts is Chris Dawson of Tamebay, an avid fan of the original Skypephone. The prospect of the S2, complete with email capabilities, has him seeing the new incarnation as even more desirable than the first. Ant UK from Fresh Plastic was feeling a little jaded after a long hot day in London, but did post about his hamper, Pimms and the Strawberry and Cream sweets.

Also there was Ewan from SMS Text News who was enthused by much of what was on show as this post from the event demonstrates. Needless to say, when Ewan means more, he means a lot more. By the end of the day, SMS Text News was littered with posts about the upcoming options on what’s coming your way from 3 this autumn. Naturally there is the Skypephone S2, and in Ewan’s words, it is looking “shit hot”. Hot on the heels of this will be the Nokia N96 on the 3 network, be sure to have a look at the Qik vid to see what could be yours come September. As part of 3’s new initiative of consumer email available on all handsets there is the addition to the 3 stable of the Nokia E71 White and the BlackBerry Bold.

And that isn’t all. 3 have also set up a deal on laptops in collaboration with HP meaning you get the PC, data allowance, a number of texts and a dongle for anywhere between £30 and £40 a month, dependent on the specifics. Very nice indeed.

For a succinct list of what is in the offing, head to WhatMobile forum, who have done superb job of nailing the important bits down.

It seems appropriate to finish in part with Ewan’s views of the event as a whole, as well as his thoughts on the greater good behind the efforts involved to engage with those that’ll be passing on 3’s brand message to the consumer. It is well worth a read and some consideration.

They’ll be more to come from us on all the details involved with the products mentioned above, and to all those I spoke to yesterday, it was a pleasure to meet you and look forward to seeing you again.

A 3 dongle on the Gadget Show

18th June, 2008Mobile Broadband

A tiny whippet of a post pointing to Ant UK’s assessment of Channel 5’s Gadget Show, which featured a 3 mobile broadband dongle as part of a segment where the presenters put citizen journalism head-to-head with the more traditional methods.

Despite Ant’s highlight being a presenter waving his laptop above his head while stood on a motorway bridge attempting to do a traffic report, there does appear to be at least a little value in what went on with regard to the dongle testing. Admittedly Ant might not be in full agreement here, but you can follow the link in his post to the Gadget Show site and make up your own mind up.

A bodacious way to improve download speeds

13th May, 2008Mobile Broadband

Ant from Fresh Plastic has been experimenting with his dongle and has found being a trialist has its advantages- unlimited downloading for one. He’s been downloading plenty of videos using Miro, but wondered how he could improve his download speeds, even though he states “I’m still getting speeds comparable to what a BT landline offers in this area.”

Though he found the garden to be the ideal location for optimal download speeds, Ant found an even better solution that will be strikingly similar to anyone who has watched seminal time-travel slacker movie ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’. Ant calls it ‘blu-hack’ and explains it thus: “Taking the USB modem out of the port, Blu-Tacking (’Blu-Hack’) it to the top of the laptops screen and connecting it back up via the supplied USB extension cable”. This method gives even better speeds than sitting in the room nearest to a 3 mast apparently, good work Ant. 3mobilebuzz and Fresh Plastic take no responsibility for time traveling laptops.

Fresh Plastic has plans for his 3 Skypephone

13th February, 20083 Skypephone

Over in the Vox community, Fresh Plastic has been outlining some plans for his Eee PC. One of these endeavours is set to involve his 3 Skypephone.

FP intends to get his Harryhausen hat on and try his hand at stop animation, utilising the combination of 3 Skypephone and Eee. He has suggested that the animation will be short, but this does not lessen our intrigue. With the promise of Lego stars (hopefully a man called Jason and some argonauts) 3mobilebuzz awaits the premiere with eagerness.

As soon as it arrives you’ll know about it here.

Fresh Plastic buys 3 Skypephones!

18th December, 20073 Skypephone

ACUK of Fresh Plastic has seen enough to facilitate a transaction and has bought a pair of 3 Skypephones.

He exchanged £85 for the duo of devices at the Carphone Warehouse after reading Chris Green’s post. ACUK is also quick to point out that the Carphone Warehouse isn’t in fact a warehouse or a purveyor of carphones - interesting.

After reading through his Crimbo shopping experience be sure to note his cheeky request in the comments section, hmmm… ;-)

Fresh Plastic is baffled…

17th December, 20073 Skypephone

Fresh Plastic, or Ant UK to those that frequent his patch of the VOX community, is asking an interesting question with regards to the 3 Skypephone. Considering the value offered by the device, he is surprised that more aren’t being snaffled by the cost-conscious consumer, and he wants to know why.

As far as he is concerned, 3 offer the best value in the UK for individuals who travel between countries served by 3 - especially considering the addition of Skype: “Throw Skype into the mix and you’ve got a network ideal for students, families and those who regularly call any country abroad.”

To read his thoughts in full head to here. A quick note though, currently the text isn’t wrapping on his entry, to be able to see it all simply highlight it and everything becomes illuminated.

Fresh Plastic posts, using a play on the title of a popular western…

3rd December, 20073 Skypephone

‘Fresh Plastic’ has emerged from beyond a Lemsip and Strepsil ridden horizon to stand defiantly outside the 3 Skypephone saloon and call out the good, bad and… err… things he’d miss, for a duel at the highest of noons.

sheriff.jpgAlthough his shooting is a little off his best (he says so himself), the article is a crystal clear case of living up to what is promised in the title. Laid out as one would want, the lists are long, bullet-pointed affairs leaving no room for confusion.

Maybe though, Fresh Plastic leaves his most intriguing point until just before collapsing back behind the vanishing point. “The 3 Skypephone costs ten times less than what my sister stumped up for an unlocked iPhone, yet the 3 Skypephone does so many things better. It’s got faster internet for a start, does picture messaging, does videocalls (even if you have to use a mirror!) can do BT GPS and run java apps.”

Someone should make Fresh Plastic Sheriff.
