17 June, 2009.Tariffs

Money Saving Expert contributor young_victor_meldrew has began a thread titled 3 Mobile introduce £0.00 per month contract, “Seems crazy, but 3UK will soon launch a new tariff called SIM ZERO. SIM ZERO will cost £0.00 per month, and Skype calls will be free.”

Kingofherts then followed up bullet pointinig the details of the offer, and adding “this is ideal for anyone who hardly uses a phone or wants one for emergencies as the SIM never expires and never needs a top up.”

Besides MSE there is also SIM ZERO discussion at Talk3G with members solo12002, handson, gorilla and ben all getting involved.

In 3’s sister-network countries you can use 3 Mobile broadband as if you were still in the UK? Richard_M44 from Yacht & Boating World was unsure of this so ask the following to his community:

“I know Lemain has a ‘3′ mobile broadband PAYG deal. I wonder if this works “as if you are still in the UK” thus using the prepaid UK allowance in Italy?”

As fate would have it, Alyssa, has the answer, and the answer is ‘yes’. She also has some more useful facts about 3 Mobile Broadband; cklick here to read them.

AVTECH, from Digital Spy, needed a bit of assistance with his 3 Broadband Dongle. Although pleased with his purchase, he was having a problem whenever he tried to use Microsoft applications, “instead of commands going to the usb dongle the computer is trying to send them somewhere else.”

Thankfully though, Anniebrion was quickly to the rescue! If you’re having a similar issue check in at Digital Spy to get a helping hand.

Both have plenty of numbers and letters, both give you mobile broadband access, but which one is better? That is the million dollar, or £30 question being asked over at the hotukdeals forum by Marky264:

“I can get both for under £30 so which one has the best [speeds] and best coverage?”

If you know your dongles, or just have an opinion on the subject, head over to hotukdeals and offer Marky264 your advice.

Mobile Today last week stated that Orange and O2 would not carry Nokia’s N97 in light of the integration of Skype into future devices. This caused a stir that has continued…

All About Symbian contributor Ewan states, “other networks have had success with the Skype infrastructure (notably 3 in the UK), the idea of being able to route calls over the internet and not the GSM services has struck fear into others.” He also asks the question whether O2’s stance on this can be considered a contradiction in light of their deal with Apple to exclusively carry the iPhone.

Discussion about respective positions of the involved parties is percolating across forums, notably Symbian-Freak, and 110MB.com if you’re after a little more.

21 January, 2009.INQ1

Waynedance has asked the Money Saving Expert community about the INQ1. He’s not used the internet via a mobile before, but is interested in doing so and thinks the INQ1 may be for him.

Ladybolan and Esgategreen are both INQ1 owners and offer advice on the handset. Dime Bar also jumps in stating that, “all in all I personally think it is a good phone”. This is despite feeling that the messenger integration is ‘a little buggy’.

If you can help out Waynedance enter the thread here.

9 January, 2009.INQ1

Digital Spy-er Frailfury has asked his community members what the best handset available on 3 is, while simultaneously suggesting it might be the INQ1 – but he wants to know what others think.

A few responses have rolled in, though the deal on the INQ1 seems to have Frailfury pretty sold. The value is something that Cooopermanyorks agrees is tempting, but suggests his method of selecting a device should be adhered to. Part of that process is reading review after review.

18 December, 2008.INQ1

Daniel has asked for advice in the 3 Skypephone forum regarding switching from the S2 to an INQ1.

He’s read a bit about the device and considering the change, but first would like some thoughts from anyone who has test driven the handset. So if you have some advice for him place it here.

The 3G Forum has been directed to a Washington Post article by e1000er discussing the possibility of 3 UK picking up the iPhone.

It comes from comments made by CEO Kevin Russell suggesting it is something the provider would look at. The news is met with differing opinions, both freddyg and Dave_Keys are optimistic, speculating regarding the iPhone and 3’s extensive 3G network. Wenklaw, however is far more dismissive, believing the device is over-hyped.

4 August, 2008.Skypephone S2

Contributers to Talk3G have been discussing the Skypephone S2 and the fact it has peeped over the horizon, and will be reaching us come August 18th.

Initial reaction comes from Ben, who is happy the device is finally on its way to shelves, and vehemently hopes that it can “build on the success of the original”. The following debate centres primarily on the use of the handset as a dongle for accessing mobile broadband when you have it wired into your laptop.

This is followed by HandsOn and 3GScottishUser talking Amoi, before offering possible reasons for the reduction of the previously obvious Skype branding that existed on the first.

Readers of Italy magazine forum (the forum for those who love everything Italian) may recently have been interested to read a post by Pigro who, in a random act of kindness, has posted details on 3’s mobile broadband pricing plan for anyone planning on taking a trip to The Boot. After a bullet pointed drill down, Pigro suggests using the coverage checker to ensure that the area you plan to visit is covered and suggests that the 1GB allowance for £10 should be “quite sufficient for a months general purpose web use” as long as you don’t download or stream too much.

After recommending topping up with data bundles to ensure you don’t get charged for going over your allowance he concludes “All in all, it’s a fantastic package for me” and also reports that existing 3 customers can get a free modem with a 50% reduction on any of the 3 monthly bundles. To read the whole post, head on over to Italy magazine forums.

29 April, 2008.Mobile Broadband

A thread titled Hands up who is a Geek!! at ukbusinessforums has given a mention to the 3 mobile broadband dongle.

Seemingly a call to action aimed at the nerd world, or a thinly veiled blog promotion by the thread originator (you decide), it has courted a response from Carl-CSNM on the subject of mobile broadband. His response is a glowing recommendation for the 3 service, stating he has not yet been let down by the little plug and play fellow. And although he honourably doesn’t mention who his home broadband provider is, he caps his post as such, “I get higher speeds via [the 3 dongle] than I do my fixed broadband line.”

Should you want to read Carl-CSNM’s post straight from the horses mouth, or discuss whether ‘geek’ can be a term of endearment, then you could do a lot worse than visit this thread. What I’d like to see answered is how one distinguishes between ‘geek’ and ‘nerd’, or if in fact there is a difference? I’ve never been sure.

Hot debates have taken place in many hallowed venues, the Roman Senate, the Central Weekend studio and of course, down the local. Comfortable additions to the long list of such cauldrons of opinion are many online forums, and it is in a selection of these that 3’s mobile broadband is being disputed.

With contributors after that elusive ‘best’ mobile broadband service, 3 are popping into threads all over the place. Money Saving Expert has people looking for a deal and Carolwat knows 3 are an option, but is concerned about coverage issues. Thankfully Steven 767 alleviates these worries and suggests ‘3 offers the best PAYG deal’. After asking the bit-tech.net community, ch424 has opted to set the grandparents up with 3’s £5 per month deal. And finally there is RedRumsBum at urban75, who is using 3 mobile broadband which he feels “works a treat” and notes that after having difficulties in the past the brand is now “ahead of the game” having “gone data mad”.

Be sure to jump into the threads to read them in their entirety, it’s an online debatathon.

Ever wondered how those that troop around the country visiting cultural points of historical reference and idyllic countryside get their internet fix? Well, I’ve been reading the Motorhome Facts forum and am now clued up, well more than I was!

Basically, before the dongle the option was, according to b6x, “to smack a great big Netmaster dish on the roof”. It seems now though there has been a bit a of a change in the best way to go about such things, due in no small part to the arrival of said dongle. Forum contributors StAubyns, peterandirene and metblue are all using 3 dongles and are seemingly very pleased with the service. Mobile homes and mobile broadband are naturally a suitable match and the contributors to the thread 3 mobile modem – half price! have been quick to realise it.

Highlight of the thread from a 3 dongle perspective has to be that peterandirene have been posting from a Fleurette 73LJ located in deepest, darkest Derbyshire with no trouble at all. Excellent.
