Is it a Computer? Is it a Phone? No, it’s an HTC Hero!

Liam Green-Hughes has brought together his thoughts on the Hero:

In his words, “Smartphones are computers that happen to be able to make phone calls, and that leads to some interesting possibilitiesâ€

That’s a good point actually – and if you look at Liam’s piece you’d be forgiven for thinking at times that you were reading a computer review, not a phone one. Take this example:

“The “home” screen is in fact one of six virtual desktops, you can screen between them using the trackball and there is an indication on the screen of what desktop you are onâ€

And again:

“A big win for the Android platform is that it is multitasking. You can keep…applets running, listen to music, “scrobble” it to last.fm and interact with Twitter all at once for exampleâ€

The Hero, after all, is a phone very much focused on providing a lot of the functionality of a computer whilst you’re on the move.  Google’s Android OS has opened up myriad opportunities to beef up your phone and turn it into a portable PC…or near enough.

Overall Liam came out of his trial with a lot of positive stuff to say about the Hero:

“The Android operating system and the software supplied are very good, full of nice touches that make it a pleasure to useâ€

“I am convinced now that my next phone must be an Android phone, it is quite clearly the futureâ€

Elsewhere, Abul has written up his final review of the HTC Hero after we loaned him one for a week.

Having already posted about his disappointment with the phone’s built in camera I was intrigued to hear what he made of the rest of the Hero’s repertoire.

“The build quality on this is very impressive, there are no cracks, no creaking and everything feels very solid.â€

“In my opinion Android does offer a great alternative to those bored with Symbian, Windows Mobile and looking for an alternative to the iPhoneâ€

“On the whole the handset is impressive, it’s elegant and coped with various tasks which I put it through. The multi-tasking of the device is impressive too. Full HTML Mail, Twitter, Full web browsing with flash – it handles them all with pretty much easeâ€

Abul ends in much the same way as Liam – with a solid endorsement of the phone.

“On the whole the handset is impressive, it’s elegant and coped with various tasks which I put it through. The multi-tasking of the device is impressive too. Full HTML Mail, Twitter, Full web browsing with flash – it handles them all with pretty much easeâ€

If you’re an HTC Hero user then get in touch in the comments section to let us know what you think of it.  Are you using it on 3’s Spotify/Hero bundle?  We’d love to hear your thoughts…
