3’s new Mifi service has been a big talking point of late. The opportunity to simultaneously connect multiple devices to a single mobile broadband connection has some interesting implications – one of which is summed up by Andrew Orlowski over at The Register:
“…a month with the MiFi – courtesy of network 3 UK – has prompted me to think the unthinkable, and consider ditching my iPhone. Or at least go far enough down that road to do the sums”
Why? Because “With a MiFi, I’d have a data connection wherever there’s a 3 network connection… So [iPod] Touch applications such as Mail, Maps and Safari suddenly become viable alternatives”
Elsewhere, Loudmouthman has posted a review drawing our attention to a couple of possible issues with the device:
“To connect the device to your laptop and again to the internet requires several button presses and frankly these are not the easiest things to see negotiate [sic].”
He goes on to discuss a lack of intuitive design with the LED display – “blue for connected and red for “it’s working” but I don’t know why”.
The LED niggle is echoed at Trusted Reviews in their piece on the device.
However, in all three instances there are major positives being discussed and top of the list are speed, network coverage and the flexibility that the device brings to users.
Which is why Computer Shopper have named 3 mobile broadband their “editor’s choice”, awarded it 5 stars out of 5, and called it the “undisputed champion” of the space, and why Adonis Mobile said that for users needing it – “there is no better way of getting them that [wifi] connection than this 3 MiFi Dongle”.
