ZDnet reviews 3’s breakfast briefing on mobile broadband speeds
Yesterday morning a special breakfast meeting was held by 3 at the legendary Groucho Club in London to discuss current myths about mobile broadband speeds, with brands advertising speeds of 7.2Mbps. 3 decided to put these claims to a test and invited journalists and bloggers to come along and participate in the event.
David Meyer of ZDNet has an interesting feature on the event, which featured 3’s head of mobile broadband Jonathan Lutz leading the proceedings. David writes “the meeting did provide a useful primer as to why, as with fixed-line broadband, you should never expect to get those 7.2Mbps or 3.6Mbps headline speeds with mobile broadband” after which he breaks down the reasons which have an effect on mobile broadband speed, such as too many users on a network, non-mobile broadband 3G traffic, signal quality etc.
David also reports that 3’s response to this was “you shouldn’t worry so much about high numbers (most mobile broadband applications only require a downlink of 1Mbps or less) and focus rather on density and reach of coverage” which he agrees with, as he reckons consumers don’t care about numbers, they just want it to work properly.
