Monkeybum’s mobile broadband adventure
May 14th, 2008
A blogger only known as ‘Monkeybum’ has recently purchased a 3 dongle; more specifically, the ZTE modem. It’s all come about due to his house moving activities, and the fact that his ISP can’t connect him for ten days after he moves in. I can imagine most of our readers would suddenly feel like they were being deprived of oxygen if they had to go ten days without broadband (I know I would) so Monkeybum quickly realised he should get “a umts/hsdpa modem from 3 - they have them on offer for £50 on pre-pay. The tariffs aren’t too bad either 7GB for £25.”
After buying his ZTE, Monkeybum realised he had to get it working with Linux. A quick visit to this thread on Ubuntu Forums helped him set it up within five minutes and “once I changed the connection (in the network manager) I was online”. He finds the broadband speeds to be as expected, “around the 1-2Mb/s”, and promises more feedback once he has used it “under more suitable conditions”.
Good surfing to you, Monkeybum!
