Skype address emergency call support
February 15th, 2008
Sue at Tamebay has been writing on the move toward VoIP providers having to offer emergency call support. This means that by September 2008, a company such as Skype will be required to facilitate a 999 call via their service.
It is a point that undoubtedly needs addressing, as according to Ofcom, over three quarters of VoIP users were unaware of the fact that they were unable to ‘holla for help’. The problem with implicating this is that the user will need to verify location every time they sign-in - a step that is likely to annoy. Sue highlights that the 3 Skypephone does get around this problem, as it provides mobile access to the emergency services. Obviously though, this is an exception - which can only mean that VoIP is set to alter.
